Wilmington, DE to Cape May, NJ

June 9, 2023 We woke up to partly cloudy, BLUE skies. So nice to see! Looking ahead to weather in Cape May today, the temp should be a high of 71 degrees, but the air quality is in the orange zone, better that yesterday. We called ahead to the Cape May campground to see if we could get in early since check-in is normally at 3 PM and he said no one was in our site last night so we could arrive anytime after 1 PM. That’s good! We were also reminded that the campground only takes cash or check, no credit cards, and our site had no sewer hook-up, so we emptied our holding tank in the state park campground before we left. They do have a “honey wagon” in our next campground that will come to empty our tank($) and since we will be here for 5 nights we may have to use that service. They also ask for proof of vaccinations for Auggie which we brought along just for that purpose. We got all ready and hooked up the Jeep right in the campsite and were on the road by 10:45. We have 137 miles to go today to Cape May, NJ. We took I-95 through downtown Wilmington and traffic was light at this time of day.

We passed Lincoln Financial Field where the Philadelphia Eagles play and they hold big rock concerts.

The highway climbed up a large hill to the Pennsylvania border.

We continued on towards the southern outskirts of Philadelphia. On the southern side of town, traffic was slow going. We traveled at 25 mph for a lot of the way which unfortunately allowed us to see some of the very poor, blighted sections of town. Very depressing! We crossed the Girard Point Bridge over the Schuylkill River. The bridge was a double-decker and we were on the lower level.

We could see the Philly skyline in the distance. The sky seemed a little hazy over the city.

The Philadelphia Navy Yard was a huge area filled with containers being loaded onto ships.

We crossed our 2nd bridge, the Walt Whitman Bridge, over the Delaware River and then we were in New Jersey.

The Atlantic City Expressway I-76 (toll) took us toward Atlantic City and then south on the Garden State Parkway towards Cape May. Both highways were 3-4 lanes, lined by trees on both sides. It was a pleasant drive.

The tolls were paid overhead.

Traffic was light on this highway. It became a little windier, but the skies continued to be sunny. We crossed over the Drag Channel near Ocean City. The tide was out.

There were quite a few fishermen out on the water in Great Egg Harbor Bay.

The weather report for our time in Cape May is for temps in the mid to upper 70’s and sunny skies, even though the air quality is in the orange zone today. But it was better today than yesterday. We arrived at our campground, The Depot Travel Park, in West Cape May at 1:30.

We checked in and went to our assigned site #145.

The park is very big and full for the weekend, but also filled with summertime resident RVers. Our site is a nice size, all grassy and shady.

Auggie was impatient to get out of the bus and check out his new digs. He loves it! There are rabbits everywhere and he goes crazy for rabbits! We got all settled in and I went to the new campground laundromat. It was a very nice facility just a few steps away. Unfortunately, I can’t use my washer and dryer in the bus without sewer hookups and because they don’t allow it. That’s OK! I did two loads of wash in 1 hour and 20 minutes. We enjoyed the beautiful weather with a nice breeze blowing to keep away the smokey skies. We should have good weather while we’re here. We have lots to see and do. After our walk around the campground after dinner, we settled in for the night. I could see the sunset out of our front window and the temps began to drop once the sun went down. Low tonight should be 54. Unfortunately, we can’t use our firepit because there is a no burning rule in place at this time. “Auggie was impatient to get out of the bus and check out his new digs.
