June 30, 2022 Carrabelle to Old Town, FL

A thunderstorm rolled through last night around 9:00 and dropped a good amount of rain in a short time. We were awakened by thunder this morning. The skies were dark to the south, but we got no rain before we left at 9:30.

We took Highway 98 east over the Carrabelle River and through the town of Carrabelle.

Our drive today took us through the Apalachicola National Forest and St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuge to the town of Sopchoppy –an Indian name meaning “river”. Part of Highway 98 is designated a scenic highway through forests and over the Wakulla and St. Mark’s Rivers. The highway had a very nice bike path along the road for many miles.

Highway 98 turned south toward Old Town and our campground, Suwannee River Bend RV Park, for the next two nights.

We arrived at 12:30 and checked in. We were led to site #49.

The view out of our front windshield is of the Suwannee River.

We relaxed a little and then began packing up what we could for our departure and return home on Saturday. Tomorrow, we have plans to go to Fanning Springs for a refreshing swim in the natural springs. We grilled chicken for dinner and took our walk with Auggie. In the river by our campsite, Bob saw what he thought was an alligator floating along. Zooming in closer with my camera, we could see that it definitely was a gator.

We walked around the campground and stopped in a few different locations along the river to see if we could spot any other gators, but there were none. We got back to the bus and within minutes, it started to rain. It rained for awhile as darkness fell.

  1. Thanks for sharing your blog. You two are adventurers & are in good shape. Lots of hiking!
Bob gets a medal for driving a “house” & sometimes a jeep. The Shaws are models for a successful marriage.

Thanks for going along with us. It’s always fun to know that someone out there is reading what I write.
