July 4, 2021 Newland, NC – Day 2

Happy 4th of July! We were all tuckered out from yesterday’s adventure, but the men got up early and the girls slept in. After a leisurely breakfast, we packed up some beverages and snacks for a drive up to Wisemans View.

This is a view of Linville Gorge–a part of the National Wilderness Area.

Today, we took the Jeep in case we needed to do some 4-wheeling on the road to the top of the Gorge. The road was gravel, but recently graded, so it wasn’t a difficult drive at all.

The views were amazing from the Overlooks at the top of the Gorge.

We could see the Linville River at the bottom of the Gorge. From there, we could also see Table Rock.

Looking in the other direction, we could see more of the Wilderness Area and the river.

We noticed rustic campsites throughout the area. Here is one of my favorites with a great view.

We could see the Lake James Reservoir in the valley.

We enjoyed our Jeep adventure today.

We ended up driving a few miles on Diamondback, Highway 226A, near the top of the bluff. It is a road famous for its twists and turns and was designed for motorcycles and sports cars.

Here is another campsite we saw with a great view of the lakes and ready for the 4th of July.

Our destination today was to have lunch at Little Switzerland–a restaurant that sits high on a hill overlooking the Gorge and Nancy’s favorite.

The view was awesome!

Our return drive took us on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a few miles and through the Little Switzerland tunnel.

There were many great views from the numerous overlooks on the drive home. Once we got back to the house, Bob took a nap and the rest of us relaxed on the deck before dinner. Auggie and Peanut were glad to see us when we got home.

We were treated to a delicious dinner of sprouts and trout, caught by Nick and his son, Brad.

We ate dinner out on the deck tonight.

We put on some warmer clothes and headed down to the lake in their Gator at 8:30 where they would be shooting off the fireworks. We sat at the lake waiting for darkness and watching all the people enjoying their holiday with family and friends.

Bob and I sat in the back of the Gator while Nancy and Nick sat in the chairs on the ground. We all had a great view of the fireworks.

The fireworks started right on time at 9:15. They put on a great show with a super finale. Leaving the area was a little crazy! I never saw so many golf carts in one place at one time. We had such a great day taking in the sights and enjoying some great food. Thanks Nancy and Nick for a great 4th of July!
